The life of St Matrona of Moscow

Matrona Nikonova was born blind in 1881 to a poor, God-fearing peasant family in the village of Sebino near Tula. From childhood God gave her spiritual sight in place of bodily eyes, together with the gifts of prayer, discernment and healing. At seventeen her legs were paralyzed, and she bore this cross for the rest of her life without a word of complaint. In 1925 she settled in Moscow, where, persecuted by the atheists, she moved from one borrowed corner to another while an endless stream of people sought her prayers. "Is Matronushka God? God helps!" she would say. She reposed in 1952, and her relics now rest in the Protection (Pokrovsky) Convent in Moscow, where the line of pilgrims never ends, in summer heat or winter frost. Orthodox Christians pray to Saint Matrona as a near and loving mother for health, family, children, work and a home, trusting her promise to hear everyone who comes to her.

Where the traditions differ

A Russian saint (glorified for Moscow in 1999); her cult is overwhelmingly Russian and Slavic, though now known in Greece. New-Calendar churches that commemorate her keep the civil dates (2 May, 8 Mar). The OCA life also lists a 7/20 March date; the Russian calendar fixes the uncovering of relics on 8 March civil (7 March in leap years).
