A great feast of the Lord

The Transfiguration of the Lord

On Mount Tabor Christ shone with divine light before the Apostles Peter, James and John, revealing the glory granted to those who unite the mind with God in prayer. St Gregory Palamas taught the prayer of the heart and this uncreated light of Tabor.

The dates

Kept on

Next, Old Calendar

The New Calendar (the Greek, Antiochian, Romanian and Bulgarian churches, the OCA and most converts) keeps fixed feasts on the church date; the Old Calendar (the Russian, Serbian and Georgian churches, Jerusalem and Mount Athos) keeps them 13 days later. Pascha and the feasts that follow it are kept on the same day by both.

How the day is kept

The faithful bring grapes and the first fruits of summer to church for the feast.

The feast falls in the Dormition Fast, the two weeks of fasting before the Dormition of the Mother of God.

It is the second of the late-summer feasts of the Savior; the third, soon after, keeps the Image Not-Made-by-Hands carried from Edessa.

In Greek custom every Sotirios and Sotiria, named for the Savior, keeps the name day on this feast.
