Holy Trinity & Zvenigorod Saviour

Three at one table, in perfect love.

Before Rublev’s Trinity, Orthodox Christians pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit, for unity and love in the family, and for peace between people. They ask the Saviour for mercy and healing. It is the icon of a home where God is welcomed.

Why this pair

Rublev’s Trinity shows the three angels who visited Abraham at the oak of Mamre, seated around a table with a chalice. The Church reads it as the One God in Three Persons, sitting in perfect love. By tradition Abbot Nikon of Radonezh asked Rublev to paint it in praise of St Sergius, who dedicated his monastery to the Holy Trinity. In 1551 a council of the Russian Church ruled that the Trinity should be painted “as Andrei Rublev painted.” Beside it is the Zvenigorod Saviour, attributed to Rublev, with its gentle, searching gaze.
