IC XC NIKA medallion
Jesus Christ conquers.
IC XC NIKA is the Church’s oldest confession in four words: “Jesus Christ conquers.” Orthodox Christians wear it asking for victory over sin and temptation, for mercy, and for protection from the power of the devil and every evil. It is pan-Orthodox, Greek and Slavic alike.
Why this sign
IC and XC are the first and last letters of “Jesus Christ” in Greek, and NIKA means “conquers.” The same four words are stamped on the bread offered at every Divine Liturgy, carved on crosses and painted beside the Pantocrator in every dome. They answer every fear with one fact: Christ has conquered death. Worn over the heart, the medallion is a small, constant prayer. It says what the Jesus Prayer asks, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me,” and it reminds the wearer whose victory it is.
