Christ and the Mother of God, pairs
The wedding pair: the Saviour and His Mother.
Orthodox Christians ask the Saviour for mercy, healing and the salvation of their souls, and His Mother for protection, for the health of their children and for a peaceful family. Together these two icons watch over a marriage and a home.
Why this pair
In an Orthodox wedding the parents make the sign of the Cross over the groom with the icon of Christ and over the bride with the icon of the Mother of God. The couple carries the two icons home to begin their icon corner. The Saviour holds the Gospel and raises His right hand. His Mother, “She who shows the way,” points to Him. Through His icon the faithful turn to the Lord Himself. Through hers they ask her to pray to her Son for them, as the Church does at the end of almost every service: “Most Holy Theotokos, save us.” The folding pairs stand open on a shelf and close to travel.
