The patron saint: St Vladimir the Great
Kept on 15 July, or 28 July on the Old Calendar · St Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles, Grand Prince of Kiev
St Vladimir, called Basil in holy baptism, was the grandson of St Olga and the son of Prince Svyatoslav of Kiev. As a young pagan prince he ruled Novgorod, fought his brothers for power and became sole ruler of Kiev, where he set up idols and lived as the pagan rulers of his day lived. The chroniclers describe a sincere search for the one true God, and the example of his grandmother and his mother also shaped him. When the Byzantine emperor Basil II asked his help against a revolt, Vladimir asked for the hand of the emperor’s sister Anna, and after he took the city of Korsun he was baptized and married her there. In 988 he returned to Kiev, threw down the idols, and the people of the city were baptized in the waters of the Dnieper. He built churches throughout his lands, among them the Church of the Tithes in Kiev, to which he gave a tenth of his income, and he encouraged schools and the founding of dioceses. As a Christian ruler he cared for the poor, the sick and the helpless, and he moved the relics of St Olga into his new church. He died on 15 July 1015 at Berestov and was buried in the Church of the Tithes. The Church calls him Equal to the Apostles and the Enlightener of Rus’, and keeps his memory on 15 July (28 July on the Old Calendar).
