Royal Passion-Bearers & Feodorovskaya Mother of God
The holy family, and the icon they loved.
Orthodox families pray to the Royal Passion-Bearers for love and unity in the home and for sick children. Through the Feodorovskaya icon they ask the Mother of God for a safe delivery, a healthy pregnancy and the gift of children. The family is on one leaf and the icon they loved on the other.
Why these saints and this icon
The Feodorovskaya icon was kept in Kostroma. In 1613, before it, the nun Martha gave her young son Michael Romanov her leave to accept the throne, and it became the family icon of his house. Alexandra Feodorovna loved it deeply, and her very name honors it. St Ambrose of Optina taught that by Orthodox tradition a woman facing a difficult birth turns to the Mother of God through this icon. Beside it stand the Passion-Bearers: a mother, a father and five children who prayed together in captivity, forgave their persecutors, and died together in July 1918.
