Sts Nicholas & Alexandra, Passion-Bearers
A marriage that held through prison and death.
Orthodox couples pray to the Passion-Bearers Nicholas and Alexandra for a faithful and honorable marriage, for love and unity in the family, and for raising their children in the faith. This diptych has no Angel panel: the husband on one leaf, the wife on the other.
Why these saints
Nicholas and Alexandra married in 1894. She came to Orthodoxy after long searching and loved it with her whole heart. He made their home a little church, praying often and honoring the saints. Their son Alexei, born after long prayer, was called “the fruit of the prayers of the Wonderworker of Sarov.” He bore a grave illness from childhood, and his parents carried it with him in prayer. From 1917 the couple shared captivity, humiliation and danger without complaint, forgiving those who held them. On the night of 16–17 July 1918 they were killed together at Yekaterinburg. The Church honors them as passion-bearers.
