Mother of God icons

She who shows the way.

Orthodox Christians pray to the Mother of God for protection under her veil from enemies visible and invisible, for the health of their children, for comfort in sorrow and for a peaceful family. Every Orthodox mother keeps her icon above her children’s beds.

Why this icon

The Theotokos, the Virgin who gave birth to God the Word in the flesh, is honored as “more honorable than the Cherubim.” Her icons follow types received from antiquity. In the Hodegetria, “She who shows the way,” she points to her Son as the path of salvation. In the Eleousa, “Tenderness,” the Child presses His cheek to hers. In tenth-century Constantinople, St Andrew the Fool-for-Christ saw her spread her veil over the people at prayer in the Blachernae church, and the Church keeps that day as the Protection. Almost every service ends: “Most Holy Theotokos, save us.”
