The patron saint: St Theodora the Empress
Kept on 11 February, or 24 February on the Old Calendar · Holy Empress Theodora, restorer of the holy icons
St Theodora came from a family of Paphlagonia long settled in Constantinople, and her mother Theoktista raised her in Orthodox piety. Around 830 she was chosen as the wife of the emperor Theophilos, who persecuted those who honored the holy icons. Theodora did not share his error. She kept icons hidden in her room and venerated them in secret, quietly helped the confessors who were exiled and persecuted, and used patience and gentleness to soften her husband’s harshness. When Theophilos died in 842, their son Michael was still a small child, and Theodora governed in his name. She restored the veneration of icons and called the exiled confessors home. In 843 a council made Methodios the Confessor patriarch, upheld the Seventh Ecumenical Council and condemned the iconoclasts. On the first Sunday of Great Lent the people walked through the city with the icons and the confessors, and the Church still keeps that day every year as the Triumph of Orthodoxy, the Sunday of Orthodoxy. Theodora also raised her son in the faith and governed with skill. Later Michael, turned against her by her brother Bardas, removed her from power and sent her and her daughters to a convent. There she gave herself to fasting, prayer and the reading of Scripture, and a Gospel book copied by her own hand is said to survive. She died in peace in 867. Her relics were later taken to Corfu, where they are venerated in the cathedral. The Church remembers her on 11 February (24 February on the Old Calendar).

St Theodore the Recruit
Kept on 17 February, or 2 March on the Old Calendar · Great Martyr Theodore the Recruit
St Theodore was a young soldier, a new recruit (in Latin, a “tiro”), serving at Amasea in Pontus on the Black Sea coast of Asia Minor. When the soldiers were ordered to offer sacrifice to the idols, he openly confessed that he was a Christian. His commander gave him a few days to think it over, and Theodore spent them in prayer. Accused of setting fire to a pagan temple, he was thrown into prison to die of hunger, and the Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him there and comforted him. Brought before the governor Publius, he confessed Christ again and was condemned to be burned alive. He made the Sign of the Cross, went up onto the pyre, and gave his soul to God praising Him, around the year 306, under the emperor Galerius. Some fifty years later Julian the Apostate ordered the food in the markets sprinkled with the blood of pagan sacrifices during the first week of Great Lent. St Theodore appeared in a dream to Archbishop Eudoxius and told him to warn the faithful to eat boiled wheat with honey, kolyva, instead. The Church keeps his memory on 17 February (2 March on the Old Calendar), and recalls this miracle every year on the first Saturday of Great Lent, when kolyva is offered in church. Christians ask his prayers for steadfastness in the faith and, by an old custom, for the recovery of things that were stolen.
