The patron saint: St Stylianos
Kept on 26 November, or 9 December on the Old Calendar · Venerable Stylianos of Paphlagonia
St Stylianos was born in Paphlagonia, in Asia Minor, sometime between the fourth and sixth centuries. When his parents died he inherited a large fortune, and he gave it all away to the poor, helping each according to his need. He entered a monastery and gave himself wholly to God, but his zeal stirred the jealousy of some of the brethren, so he withdrew into the wilderness and lived alone in a cave in prayer and fasting. People from all over Paphlagonia sought him out for teaching and for healing, and many were cured of illnesses of body and mind through his prayers. He had a special love for children and healed them of their sicknesses. The tradition says that at the hour of his death his face shone with light and an angel came to receive his soul. The Church keeps his memory on 26 November (9 December on the Old Calendar). After his repose the faithful went on trusting his care for little ones: when a child fell ill, an icon of the saint was painted and hung above the child’s bed. He is shown in icons holding an infant, and Orthodox Christians call on him as a protector of children, while women who have no children ask his prayers that they may conceive.
