The patron saint: the Prophet Micah
Kept on 14 August, or 27 August on the Old Calendar · Holy Prophet Micah
The holy Prophet Micah, the sixth of the Twelve Minor Prophets, was of the tribe of Judah and came from Moresheth, a town south of Jerusalem; for this he is called the Morasthite. His ministry began around 778 B.C. and lasted almost fifty years, under the kings of Judah Jotham, Ahaz and the righteous Hezekiah. He lived in the time of the Prophet Isaiah, and his words concerned both Judah and Israel. Micah spoke plainly against the sins of his people. He rebuked leaders who took bribes, priests who taught for money and false prophets who promised comfort for pay, and he foretold the fall of Samaria and the sufferings that would come upon Jerusalem. The Church treasures above all his prophecy of the Saviour: that from little Bethlehem, small among the thousands of Judah, would come a Ruler in Israel whose goings forth are from the beginning, from eternity. These words are fulfilled in the birth of Christ. It is not known for certain whether he was killed or died in peace. He was buried in his own village, and in the fourth century, under Emperor Theodosius the Great, his relics were found through a revelation to the bishop of Eleutheropolis. The Church keeps his feast on 14 August (27 August on the Old Calendar). The faithful ask his prayers for justice and humility before God.
What the faithful pray for
