The patron saint: St Lucy of Syracuse
Kept on 13 December, or 26 December on the Old Calendar · Holy Virgin Martyr Lucy of Syracuse
St Lucy was a young Christian woman of Syracuse, on the island of Sicily, who lived in the age of the great persecutions and was martyred under the emperor Diocletian. Her mother Eutychia suffered from a flow of blood, and Lucy took her to Catania to pray at the relics of the martyr St Agatha. While Lucy slept beside the tomb, St Agatha appeared to her, promised that her mother would be healed, and foretold that Lucy herself would bear witness for Christ. Her mother recovered, and Lucy, who had already given her heart to Christ, gave her wealth away to the poor. The young man to whom she had been promised in marriage was angered, and he denounced her as a Christian to the prefect Paschasius. Lucy confessed Christ boldly before him. He ordered her to be taken to a place of shame, but God kept her purity: the soldiers could not move her from where she stood, and a fire lit around her did not burn her. At last she was put to death by the sword. Her name comes from the Latin word for light, and the faithful have long asked her prayers for the eyes and for those who suffer with their sight. The Church keeps her memory on 13 December (26 December on the Old Calendar), and her hymn sings of the virgin who brought her martyr’s blood to Christ as a bridal gift.
