The patron saint: St Julia of Corsica
Kept on 16 July, or 29 July on the Old Calendar · Holy Virgin Martyr Julia of Carthage
St Julia was born in Carthage in North Africa to a Christian family. When the city fell to invaders she was carried off, taken to Syria and sold as a slave to a pagan merchant. Her master pressed her again and again to give up Christ, but she would not. She served him so faithfully, lived so purely, kept the fasts and prayed so steadily that in the end he stopped pressing her and trusted her completely. He took her with him on a trading voyage, and when the ship put in at Corsica he went ashore to join a pagan festival. Julia stayed on board, grieving for the people lost in error. The islanders learned that a Christian was on the ship and seized her against her master’s wishes; she did not hide her faith, and they tortured her and crucified her, and on the cross she gave up her soul to God. An angel made her death known to monks living on a nearby island. They came, took down her body and buried it with honour in their church, and many miracles were later told at her grave. Her relics were afterwards carried to a convent in Brescia in Italy. The Church keeps her feast on 16 July (29 July on the Old Calendar). The faithful honour St Julia as a model of steadfast faith in servitude and humiliation, and ask her prayers for all who are held in bondage or work under hard masters, and for all who must confess Christ far from home.
