The patron saint: the Prophet Jeremiah
Kept on 1 May, or 14 May on the Old Calendar · Holy Prophet Jeremiah
The holy Prophet Jeremiah, one of the four great prophets of the Old Testament, was the son of the priest Helkiah of Anathoth, near Jerusalem, and lived about six hundred years before Christ. God called him when he was about fifteen. He pleaded that he was young and could not speak, but the Lord promised to be with him and put His words into his mouth. For twenty-three years he called his people back from idols to the true God, preaching at the city gates and in the Temple, often with tears, and warning of the war to come. He was mocked and threatened; he wore a wooden yoke and then an iron one to show the coming servitude to Babylon. The elders threw him into a pit of mire, where he nearly died, and after his rescue he was imprisoned. His words came true when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem, and Jeremiah stayed among the ruins weeping for his city, as his Book of Lamentations mourns it. Tradition says he hid the Ark of the Covenant in a cave on Mount Nebo. Carried off to Egypt against his counsel, he lived at Tathnis, honoured by the Egyptians, and was killed by his own countrymen for his warnings. Tradition holds that Alexander the Great later moved his relics to Alexandria. The Church keeps his feast on 1 May (14 May on the Old Calendar). Even after his death he was honoured as a wonderworker, and many Christians pray to him for help against snakebite.
What the faithful pray for
- help against snakebite and dangerous creatures
- repentance for oneself and one’s people
