The patron saint: St Genevieve of Paris
Kept on 3 January, or 16 January on the Old Calendar · Venerable Genevieve of Paris
St Genevieve was born around 422 at Nanterre, a village near Paris, to Severus and Gerontia. When she was about seven, St Germanus of Auxerre, passing through Nanterre, noticed her at a night service, laid his hand on her head and foretold that she would be great before God and lead many to salvation. She told him she wished to give herself to Christ, and he gave her a brass medal with the image of the Cross to wear, counselling her to put away jewels and ornaments. At fifteen she went to Paris and entered the monastic life, growing through fasting, vigils and prayer, and God gave her the gifts of clairvoyance and of working miracles. When Attila and the Huns approached Paris in 451, she and her nuns prayed and fasted and urged the people to trust in God, and the invaders turned away from the city. During a later siege of Paris she was known for her charity, and her influence moved the Frankish rulers to show mercy to the citizens. She held the Saturday vigil especially dear: once, when the wind blew out her lantern on a stormy night on the way to church, she made the sign of the Cross over it and the candle burned again. She reposed around 512, at about eighty-nine, and is honoured as the patroness of Paris. Her feast is 3 January (16 January on the Old Calendar). The faithful ask her prayers for their cities in times of danger, for the hungry, and for perseverance in prayer and fasting.
