The patron saint: the Prophet Ezekiel
Kept on 21 July, or 3 August on the Old Calendar · Holy Prophet Ezekiel
The Prophet Ezekiel lived in the sixth century before the Birth of Christ. He was born in the city of Sarir, of the tribe of Levi, a priest and the son of the priest Buzi. When he was twenty-five years old, Nebuchadnezzar invaded Jerusalem a second time, and Ezekiel was led away to Babylon with King Jechoniah and many of his people. He lived in captivity by the River Chebar, and there, in his thirtieth year, he saw the glory of God: a shining cloud and fire, four living creatures each with four faces, wheels full of eyes, and a throne with the likeness of a Man upon it. The Fathers saw in this vision the Incarnation of the Son of God and the four Evangelists. Ezekiel was sent to preach to Israel. He warned the people of the suffering that unfaithfulness would bring, and he foretold their return from Babylon and the rebuilding of the Temple. He saw the valley of dry bones brought to life by the Spirit of God, which the Church reads as a figure of the resurrection of the dead, and the shut gate through which the Lord alone would enter. By his prayer the waters of the Chebar parted so the exiles could escape, and in a famine he asked God to give food to the hungry. He denounced a prince of his people for worshipping idols and was put to death, torn apart by wild horses. The Church remembers him on 21 July (3 August on the Old Calendar).
