The patron saint: St Claudia
Kept on 20 March, or 2 April on the Old Calendar · Holy Martyr Claudia
St Claudia was one of seven virgin martyrs who gave their lives together at Amisus, a city on the southern shore of the Black Sea, now Samsun in Turkey. Her companions were Alexandra, Euphrasia, Matrona, Juliana, Euphemia and Theodosia. They suffered in the great persecution of the Christians under the emperor Maximian, around the year 310. An imperial official had already tortured the Christians of the city when these seven women came before the ruler of their own accord, rebuked his cruelty, and confessed Christ as the only true God. They were beaten with rods in a public place, cruelly wounded, hung up and torn, and at last thrown into a burning furnace, where they gave up their souls to God while singing and praying. The Church remembers Claudia only as one of this company: no separate story of her life has come down to us, and we know her through the courage the seven women shared. The Synaxarion compares them to the number seven, which it calls a virgin number, and honors them as seven virgins who passed through fire to Christ. The Church keeps their memory on 20 March (2 April on the Old Calendar). The faithful who bear her name ask her prayers for steadfast faith, for the courage to stand with others in the truth, and for patience in suffering.
