The patron saint: St Artemius

Kept on 20 October, or 2 November on the Old Calendar · Great Martyr Artemius

St Artemius was a distinguished general under St Constantine the Great and his son Constantius, honoured with many awards for his service and courage. Constantius entrusted him with bringing the relics of the Apostle Andrew from Patras and of the Apostle Luke from Thebes to Constantinople, where they were laid in the Church of the Holy Apostles, and then made him ruler of Egypt, where he worked to spread and strengthen the Christian faith. When Julian the Apostate came to the throne and tried to restore the worship of idols, Artemius went to Antioch and openly rebuked him for torturing two bishops who would not deny Christ. Julian had him tortured and imprisoned. As he prayed in prison, Christ appeared to him surrounded by angels and promised that a crown of glory was already prepared for him. Refusing again to honour the pagan gods, Artemius bore new torments without a groan and warned the emperor of the judgement to come; then he was beheaded, and Christians buried his relics, later brought with honour to Constantinople. His warning came true when Julian fell in the Persian war. The Church remembers St Artemius on 20 October (2 November on the Old Calendar). From early times his shrine in Constantinople was known for healings, and those suffering from hernias and illnesses of the body ask his help in prayer.
