The patron saint: St Agnes of Rome
Kept on 21 January, or 3 February on the Old Calendar · Holy Virgin Martyr Agnes of Rome
St Agnes was born in Rome in the third century to Christian parents, who raised her in the faith. From childhood she gave her heart to Christ and resolved to remain a virgin, turning away every suitor. When she refused to marry the son of a city official, she was denounced as a Christian. The prefect ordered her stripped and sent to a house of shame, but the Lord would not let her be dishonoured: her hair grew to cover her like a garment, and an angel guarded her with a light that blinded anyone who came near. A young man who tried to harm her fell dead, and at her prayer he was raised to life and confessed that there is one God in heaven and on earth. Seeing this, about 160 people believed; they were baptized and later died as martyrs. At the demand of the pagan priests Agnes was tortured and cast into the fire, yet she remained unharmed, and at last she was killed with a stroke to the throat. She was about thirteen years old. Her parents buried her in their field outside Rome, many miracles took place at her grave, and her relics rest in the church built in her honour on the Via Nomentana. The Church keeps her memory on 21 January (3 February on the Old Calendar). In her troparion she calls Christ her Bridegroom and offers herself to Him as a pure sacrifice, and the faithful ask her to entreat Christ unceasingly for us all.
