The life of St Panteleimon the Healer
Saint Panteleimon was born in Nicomedia to a pagan father and a Christian mother, Eubula, who planted the seed of faith before she died young. Trained by the famous physician Euphrosynus, the gifted young doctor was destined for the emperor's court. The priest Hermolaus brought him to Christ, and after he raised a child killed by a snake, he was baptized with the name Panteleimon, "all-merciful." From then on he treated everyone without payment, healing in the name of Christ, visiting prisoners and caring for the poor. Envious physicians betrayed him to Emperor Maximian, and around 305 he was beheaded after tortures that could not harm him. Orthodox Christians pray to Saint Panteleimon as the unmercenary physician of soul and body. His name is invoked in the Mystery of Holy Unction and at the sanctification of water, and his venerable head rests at the Russian monastery of Saint Panteleimon on Mount Athos. Doctors, nurses, soldiers and every sickbed find in him a merciful friend.

Miracles
Calling on the name of Jesus Christ, the young physician restored the sight of a blind man whom no doctor could heal, and his pagan father believed and was baptized.
At his execution the sword bent like wax, and when he was beheaded the olive tree to which he was tied was covered with fruit.
Milk instead of blood flowed from his wound, and the blood and milk were kept for centuries and gave healing to the faithful.
Where the traditions differ
Russian, Greek and Antiochian usage agree; he is one of the unmercenary physicians commemorated at Holy Unction in all Orthodox churches. His patronage of soldiers is especially strong in Russia (Russian naval victories of 1714 and 1720 fell on his feast).
