The patron saint: St Vincent of Saragossa
Kept on 11 November, or 24 November on the Old Calendar · Holy Martyrs Menas, Victor, Vincent and Stephanida
St Vincent was a deacon of the Church in Spain who gave his life for Christ in the persecution of Diocletian. From his childhood he was a disciple of Valerius, Bishop of Saragossa, a wise pastor who ordained him deacon. Because the bishop was not a gifted speaker, he gave Vincent the task of preaching the word of God to the faithful. When the persecution reached Spain, the governor Dacian had both the bishop and his deacon arrested and dragged in chains to Valencia, where they were imprisoned and tortured. At their trial the old bishop’s words faltered, and the young deacon answered for them both, confessing Christ with boldness. Vincent was beaten and torn and burned, yet he did not deny his Lord. Thrown back into prison, he sang psalms through the night, and his guard saw a radiant light in the cell. At last he was condemned to be burned on an iron gridiron, and in the year 304 he gave up his soul to God. Christians later buried his body with honour. His relics came to be honoured in Rome, in a church that bears his name. The Church keeps his memory on 11 November (24 November on the Old Calendar), and the faithful ask his prayers for courage to confess Christ, for those who serve at the altar, and for those who preach.
